Green Coffee Beans – Valuable Information For Coffee Lovers

Coffee lovers around the world today enjoy coffee roasting. Home coffee roasting is special but it is also important to know about green coffee beans, the bean matrix and how the new coffees are made today. When the coffee berries are first picked from the plants they are not in the form of the roasted beans that we normally grind at home and brew into coffee beans. These are in the form of green coffee beans that are unroasted and organic.

The Coffee Berry and the Seed

The green beans are the seeds of coffee berries. In order to get these beans, the flesh of the berry is removed with machines. This would only be done after the berries have been sorted through carefully based on the degree of their ripeness and their color. Once the flesh has been taken off, what would remain is the coffee bean. These beans are fermented so that the mucilage coating on the beans would be removed.

How Do You Get the Coffee Beans – The Way We Know them?

After the beans are fermented, they are soaked for some time and are washed carefully. This would be done to remove the residue that would be left after the fermentation. The washing process will also leave you with large amount of tainted wastewater from coffee. At the end of the process the coffee beans are sorted through and dried. The beans at this stage are known as green coffee beans. These beans would then be roasted so that you can get roasted coffee that you are familiar with. There are several different types of beans available today for home roasting among which many are decaffeinated and several are organic.

Things to Check

When you are purchasing green beans, ensure that you check out for some of the possible flaws. These beans may be faded if they are over dried or have been exposed to a lot of moisture. Avoid the amber beans which are the result of mineral deficiency in the soil. These beans can result in flat and bitter coffee. The water damaged coffee beans should also be avoided since these would be toxic for the body. The over fermented beans appear soiled and are brownish in color. Avoid these beans since they would result in stale smelling coffee. These were the few things that you must keep in mind when you are purchasing green coffee beans.
